The Bureau of Land Management has approved ExxonMobil’s proposal to sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) underground in Lincoln and Sweetwater countries in Wyoming, marking the first project of its kind to be approved on BLM-managed lands.
Confirming its decision on Friday (26th August), the BLM said it hopes to work with ExxonMobil and companies alike that are looking to make a difference to combat climate change and, in doing so, support the Biden-Harris administrations decarbonisation plans for the US.
ExxonMobil’s proposal includes a CO2 disposal well pad and pipeline, which once completed will provide the opportunity for permanent underground storage of CO2 produced along with natural gas at the existing ExxonMobil Shute Creek Plant in Wyoming.
gasworld understands that the proposed disposal well will sequester approximately 60 million cubic feet of CO2 daily at a depth of approximately 18,000 feet in the water led of the Madison formation, an approved disposal zone.
