CarbonCapture appoints leader for DAC projects

US climate-tech company CarbonCapture has appointed Robert Whyte to head its planned five megatonne direct air capture (DAC) project in Wyoming, and others elsewhere.

The newly created Vice-President of Projects role will see Whyte lead the development, implementation and operation of CarbonCapture’s DAC projects, utilising his 25 years of experience in engineering and project management.

Perhaps the key project on Whyte’s agenda is Project Bison. Based in Wyoming, the development is expected to be operational by late 2023 and to be permanently removing five million tonnes of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) annually by 2030.

Adrian Corless, CEO and Chief Technology Officer of CarbonCapture, said, “Robert brings a tremendous amount of experience to CarbonCapture. [His] extensive background in the energy industry, having managed and delivered large-scale projects around the world, makes him the ideal choice to lead our project team.”

Whyte joins CarbonCapture from Suncor Energy Service, Inc. where he managed multibillion-dollar assets in all stages of development and oversaw large-scale operations throughout North America, the Middle East, and Europe.

On his new role Whyte said, “It’s rare to have an opportunity to make such a major positive impact on the world. I look forward to doing my part to support the company as we pursue our mission to decarbonise the atmosphere.”

Project Bison

CarbonCapture’s Project Bison is set to permanently remove five million tonnes of atmospheric CO2 annually by 2030.

Wyoming was selected as the project’s location due to the broad availability of renewable and zero-carbon energy sources as well as the favourable regulatory and operating environment for carbon storage.

The project is expected to be operational by late 2023, at which point it will be the first atmospheric carbon removal facility to use Class VI wells for permanent storage and the first largely scalable DAC project in the US, according to CarbonCapture.

The project will deploy CarbonCapture’s DAC modules and carbon storage developer Frontier’s CO2 transportation and storage infrastructure. Developed over multiple phases through 2030, the project will meet the rapidly growing demand for carbon-removal credits.
