Chart Industries opens Teddy 2 facility in Alabama, setting a new global standard for cryogenic storage

Chart Industries has officially opened its Teddy 2 facility in Theodore, Alabama, capable of manufacturing what is believed to be the world’s largest shop-built cryogenic tanks.

In an update published today (28th March), the US cryogenic equipment specialist said that tanks manufactured at the site will be used for propellant storage for the aerospace industry, hydrogen, and LNG storage for marine and power, and gas by rail, among others.

And when it comes to size, the site is expected to be capable of manufacturing cryogenic tanks; the site is expected to produce offerings around 70% larger than the previous largest.

The new plant is expected to fabricate the largest shop-built cryogenic tanks ever manufactured globally, around 70% larger than the previous largest. The first produces bulk tanks and rail cars.

Teddy 2’s easy access to waterways will also provide additional opportunities for customers to have lower costs, faster freight, and transportation to the site.

In February, it was unveiled that Chart’s sales growth is being driven primarily by backlog conversion, with Teddy 2’s new capacity set to provide $50-60m for delivery in 2024.

Chart forecasts Teddy 2 will achieve annual revenues in excess of $175m.

Jill Evanko, President and CEO of Chart Industries, said, “This expansion further supports our customers through increased capacity and scale, as well as lower freight costs and shorter lead times.”

“We look forward to continuing to hire from the strong, skilled workforce in Alabama.”

This contribution to local job creation and economic development efforts for the state of Alabama has also been welcomed by the state’s governor, Kay Ivey.

She said, “Chart Industries recognises both the strength of local engineering expertise as well as our advanced manufacturing and workforce capabilities. We’re looking forward to Chart’s expansion in south Alabama, creating nearly 100 new jobs for our region.”
