Climeworks seals carbon removal deal with Lufthansa Group

Climeworks has signed a catalytic carbon removal agreement with the Lufthansa Group in what is being hailed as a first for the aviation industry.

SWISS, its first customer in the industry, will leverage carbon removal via Direct Air Capture (DAC) and storage as it pursues emissions reductions until 2030 under the Science Based Target Initiative.

Dieter Vranckx, SWISS CEO, said the tie-up reflects its ambition to promote key technologies as aviation strives to remove between 3-12 billion tonnes of CO2 every year until 2050 to reach Net Zero.

He said, “In order to achieve the aviation sector’s targets and the global climate goals, we must rely on a variety of measures – including the rapid scaling of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and carbon removal.”
