Future of Energy event: US energy policy is ‘sword and shield’ approach


This current US presidency is being substantially defined by President Trump’s “impulse and his directional gut,” with the cost of energy being crucial to some of his impulses.

The assessment was made by lawyer and former US politician Eric Cantor, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of the global investment bank Moelis & Company, in his keynote address at the Gas, LNG and Future of Energy conference in London today.

“It’s a sword and shield approach,” he added at the Wood Mackenzie event. “Lower energy costs for the US adds to the competitiveness of US industry and affordable, abundant energy benefits American consumers.

“But the sword is really about how the administration wields its influence locally to reshape alignments with other countries. There is no question that the post-war international order has eroded.”
