Gas containment specialist Luxfer Gas Cylinders has secured a grant from the Alberta Innovates Hydrogen Centre of Excellence to support the development of a new Type 4 700 bar hydrogen cylinder.
The new cylinder will be a polymer-lined high-pressure hydrogen cylinder that is expected to play a strong role in the transportation market, supporting vehicles such as buses, trucks, and trains.
Luxfer will work to develop the new cylinder at its plant in Calgary, Alberta.
Howard Mead, Vice-President and General Manager of Luxfer Composite, said he is excited to partner with Alberta Innovates on the Type 4 hydrogen cylinder development.
He continued, “This investment helps Luxfer demonstrate its commitment to innovative methods for hydrogen storage as well as to promote environmental sustainability.”

Earlier this year, Luxfer said it believes that the future of hydrogen transportation will involve a combination of physical pipelines and virtual pipeline alternatives such as multiple cylinder packages (MCPs) and multiple element gas containers (MEGCs).
