Mitsui receives dual-fuel carrier, signs first Poland FSRU project

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has received the dual-fuel LPG/ammonia carrier, Aquamarine Progress II.

The 230m-long vessel, which has a cargo tank capacity of 87,119.30 cbm, was delivered today (April 26) by Namura Shipbuilding Company.

The Aquamarine Progress II will sail under a time charter contract with GYXIS Corporation.

The vessel can run on either LPG or conventional heavy oil, and when LPG is used as fuel, CO2 emissions can be reduced by about 20% and sulfur oxides (SOx,) and particulate matter (PM) by about 90% compared to heavy oil. The specifications allow for the transport of ammonia as well as LPG.

Ammonia, which emits no carbon dioxide during combustion, is expected to increase in demand in the future as a next-generation clean energy source.

The operator has also launched a new joint-venture LNG carrier manning company, PT McMOL Crewing International (McMOL), to serve its growing fleet.

First FSRU project in Poland

Yesterday (April 25), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines signed a long term Time Charter Party (TCP) Agreement, through its 100% subsidiary, for a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) with the Polish Gas Transmission System Operator, GAZ-SYSTEM.

The FSRU (pictured right), which will be constructed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard, is expected to be completed in 2027, and thereafter managed by the MOL group.

The project involves the construction of a new floating LNG receiving terminal approximately 3 km offshore from the Polish port of Gdańsk and the vessel will play a key role as a receiving and storage facility (170,000 cbm).

This will be the first FSRU to be deployed in Poland, which will contribute to the strategic strengthening of the country’s energy security.

The project is designated by the EU as a ‘Project of Common Interest’, being an infrastructure development project that contributes at a regional level.

The MOL Group has positioned environmental strategy as a key element of its group management plan, Blue Action 2035, which was launched last year.
