New partnership will produce energy from cheese

Hundreds of homes in Yorkshire will be powered by a waste product of cheese.

The Wensleydale Creamery will supply whey permeate, a valuable by-product produced during the manufacturing of the world-famous Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese, to Iona Capital’s Leeming Biogas plant part of a new feedstock agreement.

Using a process called anaerobic digestion, the venture will produce 10,000MWh of thermal power, enough to heat 800 homes per year.
