Sustainable engineering company Saipem has joined forces with steel pipe and services manufacturer Tenaris and Italian energy company SIAD to study the potential for a carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and utilisation project in Dalmine, northern Italy.
Saipem will capture the 30 tonnes of CO2 produced per day at the TenarisDalmine plant through its CO2 Solutions technology, before being harnessed by SIAD for use in the food and beverage industry, for crops and water treatment, and in metal processing and as a refrigerant gas.
The CO2 capture technology used by Saipem involves an enzymatic process which uses waste heat and eliminates the use of toxic substances commonly used in other processes.
The project is part of Tenaris’ goal to reduce its CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030, according to Michele Della Briotta, President, Tenaris Europe, CEO, TenarisDalmine.
