Shell opens first LNG filling station in Hungary

Global energy giant Shell has opened its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) filling station in Hungary, a move that the country hopes will help contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Located on the M0 ring road connecting a series of Trans-European corridors, the station will become part of a network across Hungary and wider Europe, according to the company.

Replacing diesel with LNG or could reduce CO2 emissions from heavy trucks, with companies such as Volvo suggesting that – although natural gas is a fossil fuel – It can produce 20% lower CO2 emissions than diesel.

“LNG can be one of the possible solutions,” said Istvan Kapitany, Global Vice President at Shell, adding that the new station can support the supply of LNG as truck fuel within Hungary and for freight traffic to countries like Austria, Czechia, Germany, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia.
