Woodside signs LNG supply deal with Uniper, boosting Louisiana LNG prospects

Australia’s Woodside has signed two liquefied natural gas sale and purchase deals with German energy company Uniper for the total supply of two million tonnes a year of LNG.

With the deal Woodside will supply Uniper with one million tonnes a year from Louisiana LNG and the other one million tonnes from its wider portfolio.

The deal marks a step towards Louisiana LNG reaching a final investment decision.

Michael Lewis, CEO of Uniper, said, “This deal will support our security of supply and flexible generation strategy, together with the potential development of additional gas-fired power plants in Germany.”

Europe is the largest regional importer of LNG today. In 2023, EU member states imported 134 billion cubic metres of LNG, making up 42% of total EU gas imports.

The US is now Europe’s LNG supplier, providing nearly half of the continent’s LNG in 2024, with Russia no longer at the table.

Louisiana LNG is forecast to have a total capacity of 27.6 million tonnes a year.

Earlier this week, Woodside confirmed Sarah Bairstow as Senior Vice-President of Louisiana LNG. She was previously CEO of Mexico Pacific.
