The Next “Big Deal” for Specialty Gases

0

The specialty gas industry is about 50 years old. During that time, there has been rapid innovation in production processes, instrumentation, cylinders, valves, distribution, and engineering. For example, Ultra High Purity (UHP, Grade 5.0) gases used to be produced in a handful of locations around the world.

Now, UHP gases are produced in hundreds of locations and are almost considered commodities. Indeed, independent specialty gas producers have progressed to the point that some are now producing Grade 7.0 gases (100 ppb total impurities).

As the specialty gas industry grows, it will continue to evolve. The next phase of evolution will be in “quality” and “reliability.” These innovations are “softer” than production/ analytical improvements, but can be even more significant. Quality and reliability can actively involve the entire enterprise… production, analysis, distribution, sales, marketing, engineering, purchasing, senior management, etc.

Nowadays, “quality” means more than testing the gases. Quality to modern customers means reliably meeting their specifications including: the purity of the product; the container, labels, Safety Data Sheet, and certifications; timely delivery; accurate invoices; knowledgeable sales and technical support; and professional dispute resolution.
