Bluefors launches HeRL02-RM helium reliquefier

Bluefors has launched a new helium reliquefier for helium recovery from a singular nuclear magnetic resonance unit.

The Cryomech HeRL02-RM was unveiled today (8th April) by the US-based firm to help conserve the use of helium and safeguard users from supply issues and price fluctuations.

How does it work? Well, the system creates a closed-loop, zero-boil-off system for nuclear magnetic resonance magnets.

The boiled-off helium is then passed through the vapour return line to the pulse tube cryocooler-powered reliquefier, which instantly liquefies the boil-off and returns it to the magnet’s helium bath.

Rich Dausman, President of Bluefors Cryocooler Technologies, said, “The HeRL02-RM is an ideal solution for small laboratories with one to three NMR systems and organisations with dispersed magnets.”

“Customers can stop worrying about refilling helium and let the reliquefier do the work.”

The Cryomech HeRL02-RM can be easily installed through an existing fill port and operates reliably and safely 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

For facilities with greater helium boil-off, Bluefors offers full-scale helium recovery solutions.

In March 2023, Bluefors completed its acquisition of US cryocooler business Cryomech, a US-based cryocooler technology and manufacturing firm. This is represented by the name of the new helium reliquifier.

Speaking to gasworld, Jonas Geust, CEO of Bluefors, said, “Bluefors was purely a Finnish business, based here in Helsinki and selling around the world. But we have always done a lot of business in the US – about half of all our sales, in fact.”

He continued, “As a business, we always faced the question of how to expand our presence in our key North American market. One obvious potential solution was through an acquisition, and with Cryomech, which is based in New York state, the very obvious candidate.”

“But the stars still need to align for a deal to develop and come off. We got to know each other well over many years, and we knew there was a good cultural fit. So, bit by bit, we were able to work it through and make it happen.”

Ahead of the deal, Bluefors had 400 staff working across its Helsinki campus, while Cryomech’s operation has around 200 employees working at a site in Syracuse, New York. Bluefors also had a small office in New York City with 14 sales staff, which it established in 2020.

Post-deal, the company is about 600-strong, with a third of that number in the state of New York, and about half of all sales of the enlarged business flowing stateside.

North American CO2 Summit 2024

Join gasworld in September 2024 as our North American CO2 Summit heads to Nashville. More information including our theme and agenda will be released over the coming weeks – you can register your interest to ensure you stay updated.

Our North American CO2 Summit 2023 agenda was focused on how to source, move and use CO2 more effectively and sold out, so we recommend securing your space.
