Texas-based LNG project selects EXP for environmental services

Global engineering, architecture, design, and consulting firm EXP has been awarded a contract to advance Galveston LNG Bunker Port (GLBP), a Texas-based site that hopes to produce 600,000 gallons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per day.

A joint venture between Pilot LNG and Seapath Group, GLBP hopes to contribute to the marine bunker fuel market in the Galveston Bay and Western Gulf of Mexico regions.

EXP was selected to provide environmental and regulatory support for the port. The Chicago-based business has conducted environmental surveys and had coordination and consultations with the federal, state, and local agencies for the required permits.

Specifically, EXP has prepared and submitted permit applications, including the Section 404/10 and Section 408 permit applications to the US Army Corps of Engineers and the air permitting application to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

As the project progresses, EXP will also coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies to ensure timely and safe delivery of the crucial facility.

Michael Aubele, Vice-President of Environmental and Regulatory for EXP, described the project as an important step towards decarbonisation and advancing the maritime industry.

He continued, “Our work on the project underscores EXP’s commitment to supporting a more resilient maritime infrastructure in the US.”

GLBP is a shore-based LNG liquefaction facility that will be located on Shoal Point in Texas City, part of the greater Houston-Galveston port complex, one of the busiest ports in the US. It is expected to be on-stream in 2026.

Back in February, GLBP joined SEA-LNG, a coalition focused on the commercial and environmental benefits of LNG for marine applications.

LNG bunkering infrastructure can deliver LNG and carbon-neutral bio-LNG, as well as e-LNG, as and when it becomes available to existing LNG-fuelled vessels. These Net Zero fuels can be dropped in and blended with grey LNG at any ratio.
